Noble leapt to his feet. The pile of leaves he had fallen into stirred, and a hand reached out of it. He warily grabbed the hand and pulled. A figure rose out of the leaves. His head was covered with a hood pulled low over his face, and he clutched a cloak closely about him. He took a step backward. There were no weapons in the stranger’s hand, and he made no sound. Noble relaxed a bit and took his hand off the knife in his pouch.

Suddenly the figure turned and ran. No! He was running after the knights who had shortly gone that way! They could not risk him giving them away! Noble and Jamie sprinted after the fellow, putting on a burst of speed to close the distance between them. The fallen leaves on the ground rustled loudly in the race and Noble’s concern was that the knights not far ahead of them would hear them coming. The mysterious figure was almost within reach when Noble leaped at him, tackling him to the ground. He put his hand over his mouth to keep him from calling out.

Noble pulled the hood off. To his surprise, long tresses of silky dark hair fell out of the hood and over the person’s shoulder. His captive was not a man, but a girl! Noble jumped back in surprise.

“Shh!” Noble warned softly, and took his hand away from her mouth. “Were you hiding from the army?” he whispered. She nodded, her dark eyes huge in her face. She was about their age, and quite a pretty girl. She looked very frightened at the moment, though.

“Then we are friends. We will not hurt you. But you must tell us what you are doing here,” Noble said.

“Noble,” Jamie whispered, “let us move away from this place before we talk further.” Noble agreed. They quietly melted back into the trees, further away from the camp and the group of men who had just left.

Finally Noble stopped the girl and said, “Tell me your name.”

By that time the girl had gotten over her fright. She looked at him with her head held high and said, “First tell me yours.”

“I am Noble, and this is my friend Jamie.”

As soon as he said it, he realized what he had done. A light shone in the girl’s eyes and she said, “Noble? I have heard of a knight named Noble in Caernarfon.”

He tried to laugh it off. “Do I look like a knight to you?” He felt miserable. Some spy he was! He had not meant to tell his true name, and now he had told his secret to a girl!

“They say he is very young—still a boy, really. It is you, isn’t it?” She laughed softly. One look at Noble’s honest face was all she needed to know the truth. “Why are you here? Are you spying on the army? I saw you hiding from the knights, as well.”

This girl was just too smart! Noble grabbed her arm once more to keep her from running away.
